Lake Highlands athletes really get around these days.

Jason Dann, the football team’s talented kicker, witnessed Nebraska’s record 300th consecutive home sellout last weekend in Lincoln. Dann took teammate Chui Kaping with him and since Dann was on a recruiting visit, the players got to be on the field during warm-ups. Dann, a longtime Husker fan, has been offered preferred walk-on status to Nebraska, which has a storied walk-on tradition.

"It was awesome," Dann said. "It’s always a sellout, so it wasn’t too different there. But they showed clips throughout the game of coaches saying congrats and stuff. It was a pretty cool thing to be a part of."

A few days earlier, volleyball players Christina Flanagan and Caroline Henton witnessed another bit of history in a road trip to College Station.

Flanagan and Henton went down to see Texas A&M play Nebraska – and watch former teammate Tori Mellinger start at libero for the Aggies.

"As soon as we walked in Reed Arena, I was super pumped," Flanagan said. "I saw Tori in her libero jersey warming up and I just thought to myself, ‘Well hey, that’s my best friend, starting libero for A&M."

The girls got to see Mellinger help the Aggies defeat No. 6-ranked Nebraska for the first time in 10 years.

"It was amazing!" Henton said. "She played absolutely incredible, and I am so proud of her. She just basically dug everything that came to her. She just couldn’t be stopped."

Flanagan and Henton’s visit turned out to be good luck for Mellinger.

"The win was absolutely amazing," Mellinger said. "It was so good to see Christina and Caroline, it definitely was nice to have some LH support on the sidelines!"
