The RISD board has released a statement covering Superintendent David Simmons’ resignation on Monday night — which is, we’re told, all that they’re saying about it. We will keep working on the story.
Said the statement: "The action was a mutually agreed upon decision involving philosophical differences. The Board desires to build on RISD’s accomplishments under the state accountability system and expand beyond what our legislators say is the measure of achievement. RISD has always been on the leading edge and we intend to stay there. Our students, staff and community deserve this commitment.
"The Board will turn its focus immediately to a transitional leadership plan that will include naming an interim superintendent. We pledge to keep our staff and community informed as this process unfolds. Until that time, day-to-day operations will remain under the direction of the Deputy Superintendent. The Board thanks Dr. Simmons for his service to the district and wishes him future success."
Our Carol Toler, meanwhile, exchanged emails with Simmons, and this is his email to her:
“I truly appreciate the support I have had in RISD and in this case in Lake Highlands. While leaving with mixed emotions, I truly believe this change to be in the best interest of the district and me personally. Please relay my most sincere appreciations to the community of Lake Highlands. It has been an honor to serve as superintendent of RISD, and I am very proud of the gains we have made in many areas, but as always much remains to be accomplished. My hope is for all to rally around the staff and students and support the next superintendent in leading this great district.”
