If McDonalds is a 2 and Buzzbrews is a 9 when it comes to breakfast spots, Subway, which recently added breakfast to its menu, is about a 4, which isn’t bad, because it’s in the fast food, pre-made breakfast realm. (Then again, I’m not really a breakfast person — unless you count coffee, coffee w/ skim milk and then more coffee a bit later). I do treat my children occassionally to fast food breakfasts when we are on the run (or that is, I used to, until they saw Food, Inc.) and Subway’s menu is certainly a good alternative to the McGriddle (two pancakes soaked in syrup sandwiching two pieces of processed meat, add cheese, which according to the movie Super Size Me "packs as much fat as a Big Mac, and has more sugar than a pack of McDonaldland cookies"), or other fast food breakfast menu items. (Granted, we don’t have a Dunkin Donuts in our neighborhood, and they are pretty great with the non-donut breakfast).

The nice thing about Subway breakfast, like its other meals, is that you build your sandwich/wrap — I had the Western egg-white flatbread sandwich — with the veggies and extras you want (jalapeños!). They also have options for bacon lovers —darn the calories —such as the double bacon and cheese toaster. (Did you know there’s a site called bacontoday.com? Genius — that’s where I got the pic, by the way). It’s not bad food, and It’s cheap and convenient. But I probably won’t go back to Subway for breakfast (don’t worry Jared, still love ya for lunch) because of its coffee shortcomings. They offer pretty decent coffee, Seattle’s Best, but they don’t have the coffee comforts — no Splenda or half-and-half in sight. This is something McDonald’s got right a couple years ago. Good coffee, specialty coffee drinks, iced coffee and all the stuff people like to put in it — sugar, sweetner, half-and-half, syrup, etc, which they’ll put in for you or let you prepare on your own. If you’re going to serve breakfast, you have to do coffee right.  They’d be smart to put in a 7-11 style coffee station.
