After a very successful first year, the Lake Highlands Community Garden behind the old Armory building at 7901 Goforth will be breaking ground, literally, this Saturday February 28th for the expansion of 50 new plots to add to the existing 36.  The new plots will be 112 to 192 square feet, costing $56 to $96 annually, respectively.  30 of the 50 new plots awaiting construction have already been claimed.  The map shows the area of expansion.
Starting at the crack of dawn Saturday morning and working until sunset, the demolition of 14,000 square feet of asphalt will take place using a Bobcat S250.  Volunteers will be needed to haul out smaller chunks of asphalt in anticipation of the tilling that will follow.  And hopefully before daylight is gone, rows will be marked for trenching with the big Ditch Witch for the installation of irrigation pipes on Sunday.  Other duties will include the assembly of PVC piping, faucets and housing, and the building of plot boxes.

Along with the City of Dallas’ Office of Environmental Quality, much of this expansion is again thanks to Scott’s Miracle-Gro, Keep America Beautiful, and Keep Dallas Beautiful. And the LHCG’s cadre of local support from neighborhood businesses, organizations and individuals is growing.
