We’re so blessed in Lake Highlands to now have two community gardens. Highlands Christian Church on McCree between Aldwick and Audelia will be breaking ground for the second community garden in our neighborhood this Saturday, Dec. 13. Forty cubic yards of top soil is being delivered along with all the wood necessary to build the 30 plot boxes behind the church — both 8×16 and 8×24 in size.

On Friday, a rented tractor will be tilling the ground. And Lindsey Tree Service has been delivering a steady supply of mulch. On Saturday, the work will be to build the boxes and fill a 3-inch layer of soil in each. The following week, the irrigation will be installed — yes, a faucet for every plot! — and a bit down the road yet, the area will be fenced. When I talked with head organizer Gene Carlton a couple of days ago, he said there are still nine plots remaining. Interested? Contact Gene at genecarl@swbell.net, 214.348.1802.
