Not only were there kittens visiting the Lake Highlands Community Garden this past weekend, but an Eagle too — Eagle Scout, that is. We have pictures of the weekend’s fun.
Tim Wall, a member of Boy Scout Troop 890 out of the Lake Highlands United Methodist Church, earned his Eagle Scout rating by building a very cool compost bin for the LHCG gardeners. Thanks to the donation of a dismantled redwood deck from Lake Highlanders Doug and Nancy Rabe and a lot of hard work on a hot day (Tim had a little help from his troop mates and parents too), the three compartment bin has a plexi-hinged lid, meshed sides and removable front slats. It’s a beauty!
As to the kittens: For several weeks the gardeners have been tending to an obviously nursing skin and bone Manx that’s taken up residence at the LHCG but no kittens, had been seen. At last they’ve been found. Mama Manx hid them well, wedged between palettes in a shed.
And what would the LHCG be without a bunch of kids and a grandparent or two? It surely is a thriving community at the little patch of ground behind the old Armory at White Rock Trail and Goforth.
UPDATE: Two of our fearless LHCGer’s safely captured three kittens this morning and are on the way to have them all checked out at the vet. Good job!
