Food at Flavor is almost as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate. Items on the classic combo platter are fashioned into the shape of a flower — California rolls arranged to create the stem, tuna and salmon sashimi equal red and pink petals, and a dollop of wasabi is a meticulously molded leaf.

Dessert dishes are a canvas for brightly colored sauces that paint butterflies and blossoms alongside a mound of coconut cheesecake. But don’t let the victuals’ visual appeal stop you from digging in — beneath the surface beauty lies a world of flavor.

Chef Weeray Ututedpornrata (mercifully nicknamed Oudi) says he once wanted to be an artist, but today he understands that “food is art”. Oudi and owner Piyada Huatcharoen agree that, in addition to presentation, nutrition and value take top priority when designing dishes.

Huatcharoen opened the eatery just north of I-635 about 18 months ago. For the first several weeks, she began to believe those who had told her Lake Highlands folks wouldn’t cross the highway for food, but once word of Flavor’s unique fare got around, she had diners not only from Lake Highlands but also from throughout the city.

Soon she’ll open a second location on Commerce in the Deep Ellum district.
