OK, so we Dallasites don’t live seaside. That doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy fresh crab or a Baja-style fish taco done right.

That’s thanks in part to Big Shucks, where fresh seafood is a menu staple. Take the oysters, for example, which are flown in weekly from the Texas Gulf Coast, or the house specialty shrimp cocktail, a pleasing blend of fiery Serrano-seasoned shrimp and buttery avocado chunks with a dash of lime juice, all served in a frosty beer mug.

The folks at Big Shucks brought their coastal concoctions to our neighborhood in October, but after a water heater fire in December, the restaurant closed for repairs. This month, the doors are reopening, and so is that alluring covered patio — just in time for summer.

Catch a weekday happy hour there for specials such as $2 Tecate beers and $3.25 margaritas, along with half-price oysters. And although most people probably skim past the dessert portion of the menu, the key lime pie is perhaps the best-kept secret. It’s an in-house recipe that’s the perfect balance of tart citrus and velvety cream.

Order a slice; trust us on this one.
