Elsa Pair, Steve Clary and Grace Clary get a head start building raised beds

Earth Day won’t be the only thing celebrated this Saturday April 12th – the Lake Highlands Community Garden will hold an official ground breaking at 9:30 am. The LHCG, the first Community Garden in this area, is located at 7901 Goforth, behind the old Armory building at White Rock Trail and Goforth.

Along with the 31 inaugural plot holders working to finalize their garden beds, representatives from City agencies and Scott’s Miracle-Gro will be at the site promoting the LHCG. The City and Scott’s are responsible for providing services and financial assistance to what will be a totally organic Community Garden.

And at 10:30 am, Lake Highlands neighborhood Art Camp students will arrive to begin work on a sculptural piece with the theme ‘Peace In The Community’. The students range in age from Kinder to 6th grade and will create an improvisational sculpture in the vein of artist Andy Goldsworthy. The piece will be site specific using materials at hand to create a temporary sculpture in harmony with the LHCG. In the process of gathering materials, the children will be helping clear garden beds. LHCG organizer A.L. Nickerson and his wife Linda will be welcoming all volunteers to pitch in and help get the plots ready for planting.

Believe it or not, there’s already a waiting list for the LHCG and talk of a possible second Community Garden.

Please come see the Lake Highlands Community Garden as a volunteer or visitor on April 12th. For more information, please contact A.L. Nickerson, gardeners61@att.net.
