Lake Highlands native Matt Stover, a former LHHS kicker who has gone on to star in the NFL and is currently with the Baltimore Ravens, has thrown down the gauntlet to NFL Players Association president Gene Upshaw, beginning a campaign to replace Upshaw, according to a brief in the DMN today that was picked up from the Associated Press. "I feel that the board must begin to prepare for a change in leadership immediately," Stover is quoted as saying in an email to the union’s executive board and player representatives. Upshaw is under contract through 2010, but has been assailed by some players for his nonchalant stance on boosting benefits for former players whose lives have been made difficult by injuries suffered during their playing days.
