Sometimes it’s unbelievable to me that I bang these things out in snippets of time. My Creative Director husband is the king of the the 30 second spot. A bit different but man, he’s got it nailed. He can bang out copy like nobody’s business. And then we see it on T.V.

I strongly suspect that by virtue of sleeping with him I get the juice – of writing copy, that is. And that’s why I took Jeff up on his offer/challenge. I turned the evening meal burner on low, I set the dryer on 60 instead of 50 minutes, I told El to wait just a few more minutes and then I came into the office to write this blurb.

I had commented back to Jeff on the whole Picasso’s thing that businesses certainly don’t have to give to the community but in my book it’s a package deal. We support you, you should support us in return. In the process, put out a good product you’re proud to serve and serve it with joy to your valued customers. Jeff thought I should elaborate. Here it is.

We all live in this place together, we’re all neighbors. Some own businesses, some stay home. But we’re all Lake Highlander’s. (I went into the Starbuck’s at Abrams/Royal today to pick up copies of ‘Neighbors’, you know, that Saturday section in Dallas’ only newspaper, ’cause my daughter is published. When I asked where the free issues of the paper were, the nimrod behind the counter said, ‘Over there, but we’ve not got anything Lake Highlands ’cause we’re only ‘Lake Highlands-ish’).

Man, I snapped fast and hard and said to the nimrod 20 years my junior…’You’re location is NOT ISH, YOU ARE LAKE HIGHLANDS!’ And I grabbed my copies. But I digress.

I’ve done three fundraiser auctions – two I produced turn-key. In all cases I walked the walk and talked the talk. I went to business after business soliciting support – monetary or in the form of Gift Certificates. During my first I held my two year old in my arms. In all cases, ALL cases, I had a smile, I stressed that, hey, if you can’t support my cause I assure you, I’ll STILL do business with you! Solicitation is not a scary thing – it’s just a matter of who can when! Anybody who scares you into contributing is a politician and you, as a business, should be wary. You, as a solicitor should be gracious.

Businesses, be smart though! There are many schools, churches, youth groups, BSA and GSA here in our lovely Lake Highlands that need money to do many great things that we, as a neighborhood, pride ourselves on. If you can support them (and I’m talking $20 GC’s that’ll turn into $40 bucks to the school or organization at the silent auction), do it if you can!

You get the tax write off. You also get the undying (assuming they send thank you’s, which they all should!) thanks to post in your window. And if you’re lucky, you also get me or someone like me to get you PRESS!

We’re all in it together. My lovely daughter is now nine. And I still bring her with me (can’t hold her in my arms anymore) to smile and ask…’Will you support our school’? And can I invite you to the festivities too?
