The Lake Highlands Forum, a neighborhood group that meets the third Thursday of each month, is open to all neighborhood residents. Parkland Health & Hospital System has announced the opening of its Fair Oaks Youth & Family Health Center on the campus of the new Emmett J. Conrad High School, 7502 Fair Oaks. Operating in partnership with the Dallas Independent School District, the clinic began offering mental health services for children and adults last month, and begins its medical care Thursday, March 1.

District 107 State Rep. Allen Vaught has been appointed vice chairman of the House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence. This committee oversees bills that concern criminal law, probation and parole, and criminal procedure in Texas courts. Vaught served as a United States Army Reserve Captain and fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is managing attorney of Franklin, Cardwell & Jones, P.C.

Bishop Lynch High School boys’ swim team won first place in the TAPPS Division 1 North Region swimming and diving championships recently. The team won 10 out of 12 events. Two-event winners were Tony Rau and Tim Moore, and single-event winners were Jon Horak, Malin Kenny, Kyle Dupuis and Michael Masters. Masters set a new school record of five minutes, 10.08 seconds in the 500 freestyle.
Bishop Lynch High School girls’ swim team finished in fourth place in the recent TAPPS Division 1 North Region swimming and diving championships. In one-meter diving, Nichole Burgess finished second, Shana Brockman, third, and Abbie Sheffield, sixth. Alex Brown won fifth place in swimming’s 200 individual medley, and Danna Callahan placed fifth in the 200 freestyle and sixth in the 100 freestyle.

Bishop Lynch High School senior Ryan Edwards has been nominated to compete in the National Honor Society’s scholarship program sponsored by the National Association of Secondary Principals (NASSP). This national competition awards more than $200,000 in college scholarships. The Lake Highlands resident plans to attend the University of Texas and major in English.
The Exchange Club of Lake Highlands recently announced its Youth of the Month awards, and the recipients are honor students Rachel Horres, Patrick Hesseler and Jenna Popp. Horres’ college plans include attending The University of Texas, The University of North Carolina, Wake Forest or Vanderbilt. She is the daughter of Debbie and Stratton Horres. Hesseler plans to study business or pre-med after graduation from Lake Highlands High School. He is the son of Jennifer and John Hesseler. Popp plans to study business at the University of Texas. She is the daughter of Joan Popp. All three honorees received a plaque and NorthPark Gold.
Lake Highlands High School students Deborah Bankhead and John Burks are recent recipients of Character Counts Awards presented by the Exchange Club of Lake Highlands. Bankhead plans to attend the University of Texas to study journalism, Spanish and later, pursue a law degree. She is the daughter of Kathy and Steve Bankhead. Burks will attend Texas A&M University to major in business and law. He is the son of Kris and Ed Burks.

Richland Collegiate High School will be accepting applications through March 9 for the Richland Collegiate High School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering (RCHS). Applicants must be entering the 11th grade in fall 2007. RCHS students can complete their last two years of high school at Richland College, graduating from RCHS by taking college courses and earning college credits with a focus on mathematics, science or engineering. RCHS students can also graduate from Richland College with an Associate of Arts degree, ready to transfer to a four-year university. The high school is tuition-free and includes the use of a laptop. Students may join the Richland College choir, bands, orchestras, theater productions, student newspaper, intramurals, athletics and student government. The school opened last fall with 175 high school juniors and will include juniors and seniors in fall of 2007.
