Poetry Competition. Lake Highlands homeschooler Catherine Tatsch, age 12, has been named a finalist in the 1999 Express Yourself! Poetry Competition sponsored by the Dallas Foundation and the Dallas Public Library. Catherine’s poem was one of 60 chosen from 1,347 entries from Dallas K-12 students.
Moss Haven Kudos. Five of the school’s orchestra students performed in the Richardson Civic Center’s “String Fling”: Lisa Bradley, Joey DeCosta, Jason Frappier, Kate Lindauer and Blair Watler. Mary Elizabeth Hutton won the Texas History Contest, sponsored by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, for her essay on Lorenzo de Zavala. Brandon Peterson, Kurt Stadelmann and Reid Watler have earned their junior degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. The soccer team, the Dallas Texans, won first place in their division this spring. Heather Russell and Aaron Schwarz were selected for the 1999 All-District Elementary Choir. Sarah Cason’s artwork was selected to represent the school in a Youth Art Display at the RISD Administration Building.
Artful Achievement. Lake Highlands graduate Stacy Irvin, daughter of Carol and John Irvin, was recently awarded the 1999 Margaret Stonewall Wooldridge Hamblet Award at Vanderbilt University. The award will enable her to travel and make art for a year. Vanderbilt will host an exhibition of her art at that time.
Merriman Project. Swiss Avenue Bank North Dallas sponsored Our Book Company for the second grade of Merriman Park Elementary. The sponsorship included a field trip to the bank where lifelong Lake Highlands resident Jerry Allen discussed the importance of borrowing money and repaying debts. Two representatives signed a $50 “Promise to Pay” to help underwrite the program; proceeds from the project will be used to repay the “note” and the Bank will then donate the money back to the classes.
Military Notes. Cadet Benny Zirlin, son of Lake Highlands residents Carol and Elliot Zirlin, was recently promoted to Cadet PTC for the month of February.
Austin College Recognition. Lake Highlands graduate Natalya Kaliazine was awared the Grace Collins and Will Collins Scholarship for outstanding achievement in business and economics. Natalya is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V. Kaliazine.
