Library friends pick officers: Mike Askerman has been elected president of The Friends of the Audelia Road Public Library for the 1998-1999 year. Other officers elected were: vice-presidents, Jim Pattillo and Ivy Willy; secretary, Kay Hood; and treasurer, Nola Jones. Mary Jane King will serve as membership chair, and Yvonne Yielding and Annie Frank will

be program chairwomen.

The group, in its first year, purchased about $1,500 in new books, and provided a free monthly newspaper available to visitors called The

Book Page.

Resident gets ticket home: Shirley Bailey of Lake Highlands is among 18 Dallas-area seniors who received free airline tickets home for the holidays as part of a project by Senior Citizens of Greater Dallas and Southwest Airlines. Recipients were selected based on financial need and reason for travel.

Brownies get visit: Rip Parker, who works with the homeless in downtown Dallas, spoke to Merriman Park Elementary’s Brownie Troop 490. After his talk, the girls made more than 300 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Parker to hand out on his next visit to the homeless.

Music Hall tabs Atkinson: Donna Atkinson of Old Lake Highlands has been named the events and operations manager of the Music Hall at Fair Park. Atkinson has worked at Fair Park for eight years, including a stint as assistant general manager.

Alumnae honored: The Dallas Alpha Chi Omega has honored its 25- and 50-year members from Lake Highlands. They include ……

Trip winners: Dede and Bill Blocker won a trip to Santa Fe, N.M., donated by Realtor Missy Vanderbilt during her Client Appreciation Day.

Awards

Lake Highlands paramedic honored: Robert Steely, a Dallas firefighter and paramedic who is fluent in sign language, has been honored by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. The group recognizes individuals and organizations that provide exceptional volunteer services. Steely has worked with several volunteer groups, including Emergency Room Nurses and the Deaf Action.

Skillman Library: The Skillman/Southwestern Branch Library’s adult book club will discuss Annie Proulx’s The Shipping News at 6:30 p.m. January 13 at the library, 5707 Skillman. New members are welcome.

Other library programs include the Mid-Winter Travel Series 3 p.m. on January 9 and January 16. On January 9, Peggy Raitz Yaws of Pak-n-Go Travel will discuss the Disney Resorts and family cruises. On January 16, she will talk about vacations for singles and couples.

Just for kids

Skillman Library: The Skillman/Southwestern Branch Library’s Saturday Library League will hold a puppet show featuring Mother Goose and performed by Nancy Goldberg at 10 a.m. January 16. The event, at the library, 5707 Skillman, is recommended for children up to age 6.

Other library programs include Toddler Time, at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays in January for children 18-36 months accompanied by an adult; pajama story fun at 7 p.m. on January 11 for children 2 and older in their pajamas; and a preschool story program at 10:40 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays in January.

Audelia library: Family story time in January will be a winter puppet show, “Witch’s Winter Kitchen,” with a snowy craft and film. It is set for 10:30 a.m. January 9.

Also, toddler tale time will be held at 10 a.m. January 11, 13, 20, 25, and 27, with activities for children ages 18-35 months. A preschool story time will be held at 10:45 a.m. January 13, 20, and 27 for children 3-5. For information, call 214-670-1350.

Meetings
