Volunteers needed: The Lake Highlands Junior High School Saturday Enrichment Program, which helps students prepare for the TAAS tests in math, reading, and writing, is looking for parents to help with the classes – especially for math. Math volunteers don’t need advanced skills; rather, the work focuses on word programs using basic math skills. For information or to volunteer, call Scott Hieger at 214-503-2520.

Teddy Bear Time: A new program, sponsored by the RISD and the Richardson Adult Literacy Center, encourages literacy among four- and five-year-olds and their familes. Teddy Bear Time targets students in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes who speak a language other than English in their home or are low-income. For information, call 214-972-0704.

Fundraiser set: A silent and live auction, benefiting St. Patrick’s School, will be held 7 p.m. January 20 at Royal Oaks Country Club, 7915 Greenville Ave. Tickets for the event, presented by the school’s Parent and Teacher Association, are $25, and include dinner and entertainment. Bishop Lynch honors veterans: Bishop Lynch High School’s Student Council hosted a breakfast to honor U.S. veterans. Student trumpeter Chris Figuera played taps in activities that included performances by the school’s Show Choir and band. Honored guests were VFW Unit 6796 commander Warren Davis and Ferman Sullins, a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Hoop shooters: Anthony Abdo, Meagan Frappler, Matt Jeske, Jenna Popp, Jeff Rampey and Laura Mitchelll are the winners of the Hoop Shoot contest at Moss Haven Elementary. The students advanced to the district-wide program, part of the Elks national free throw shooting contest.

Student honored: David Hendler, who lives near White Rock Lake, won first place in the Association of Texas Photography Instructors fall contest in the black and white student life category. Hendler is a senior at Greenhill School.

Outstanding soloists: Dana Carlson and Kitty Davis, eighth graders at Forest Meadows Junior High, were named outstanding soloists at the RISD Solo/Ensemble Vocal Festival.

Meetings

Elementary school council: The Lake Highlands Elementary local school council will meet at 4 p.m. January 19 in the school library. Early PTA: The Lake Highlands Area Early Childhood PTA will meet at 9 a.m. January 13 at Highlands Christian Church, 9949 McCree Road. Mike Yudizky of the North Texas Poison Control Center will talk about ways to protect children from poisons. For information, call 214-343-5141.
