The program was founded in 2012 by Kyle Horne, then LHHS’ new swim coach. He began the team as a way to keep his swim team athletes fit in their spring off-season, and today most of the team, now coached by Brian DuBose, continues to be swim team members.

“I’ve been doing summer league swim team for as long as I can remember,” says senior Brooke Self, “but I didn’t start getting serious about it until 7th grade when I joined the Dallas Mustangs, a local club team. It’s funny, I took a break from summer league because the practices were too early, and here I am waking up at 5:30 every morning to play water polo.”

Both sports occur in the pool, of course, but that’s where the similarities end, says Self.

“I love the team aspect of water polo. With swimming it’s just you, and it’s all in your head but with a team sport like water polo it’s about communicating and depending on your teammates. I’ve created some of the best relationships through this team, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Well, I might trade the early practices, but I still love all those girls.”

Sophomore Luke Moran never swam competitively a day in his life, and he shocked parents Kristen and Matt when he told them he’d joined the team. He shocks them again every day when he gets himself up early for practice.

“I joined the team because water polo seemed fun and a good way to get in shape,” says Luke. “And I love scoring goals.”

Both the boys’ and girls’ varsity are preparing for the big Flower Mound Tournament, to be held April 15th at the Lewisville ISD Westside Aquatic Center. The following weekend they hope to qualify for the North Region Championship in Carroll ISD, and the State Championship will be held May 4-5. The team will host a Swim-A-Thon in May to raise funds for next year’s program. Go Cats!
