Costco Wholesale unveiled initial plans for a 150,000-square-foot store northeast of Churchill and Coit during a City Plan Commission meeting Thursday.
Along with groceries and general retail, the store will have a pharmacy and bakery, as well as tire, photo, optical and hearing-aid centers.
It will have 703 parking spaces, more than the city requires. The store’s landscaping plan calls for 244 trees, which are 99 more than are required.
The 13-acre site is trapped between Coit and North Central Expressway and has been vacant for many years, and it would be difficult to develop with anything other than a big box store, says plan commissioner Jayne Schultz.
It’s the best use of the property, she says, and most neighbors are enthusiastic.
“This is really a gift to our community,” Schultz says.
