Jingle Bell Run: This particular event is not in Lake Highlands, but you will find many of your neighborhood runners drawn to this extra-festive holiday 5k. It takes place tonight (Monday) at the Hilton Anatole and you can register beginning at 4 p.m. Race starts at 7 p.m. and a big party follows. It’s the weekend warriors’ holiday tradition, and not a bad way to free up some caloric space for the following day’s food-centric festivities. The entry fee benefits the Trinity Strand Trail which eventually will connect to White Rock Trail by way of the Katy Trail. Details here.

Holiday Express Train: For years now, retirees Joel and Bebe Occhiuzzo have turned their yard each holiday season into a wonderland complete with a riding train for the kiddies. It’s a little crowded most of the season, but free. They live about three miles north of Lake Highlands, visible from Duck Creek Linear Park. Sadly, the Occhiuzzos are retiring the train after this year, due to it being too expensive to maintain, Joel, who is now in his 80s,  told the Morning News. So don’t miss one last ride.
