“Oh geez,” you might say, “another 5k near White Rock Lake. Ho hum.”

Well, this one includes the opportunity to race goats on leashes. Now don’t you feel silly for saying “ho hum”?

The event starts with a traditional 5k run, plus a 1k fun run/walk at 8:30 a.m. at Flagpole Hill. After that, those who qualify by raising a certain amount for Seed Effect and Empower Sudan, local nonprofits working to help the people of South Sudan, will vie for the prestigious Goat Trophy.

To qualify to race a goat, you must form a team of eight and be one of the top 10 fundraising teams.

Winning teams will race goats, relay style, at Flagpole Hill.

One of the unique event’s organizers is Lake Highlands resident Mike Congrove who, on a trip to Rwanda, befriended a local who told him about the area’s post-war devastation.

“In a place the size of Texas there were no paved roads, little clean water, and no electricity. I was immediately drawn to (then) Sudan, now South Sudan,” Mike explains. “Since 2006, we’ve worked together to start 110 churches, a bible school that trains leaders, 11 elementary schools, a microfinance organization (www.seedeffect.org), a recovery program and two farms. I love the challenge and the opportunities in South Sudan, and I love that God is at work redeeming one of the toughest places on earth.”

So, running with goats it is. I hope it brings in loads of moolah! For full details visit Thegoatrun.com.
