A man was shot to death by a police officer Sunday night at about 8:45 in Lake Highlands.

A commenter today pointed out that we had covered the sensational SMU Crane Guy story, which occurred slightly outside our neighborhood, but not the shooting inside the neighborhood.

OK, fair enough.

Police were called to Tabor Drive in Lake Highlands because a man was threatening suicide. When they arrived — in a squad car and in uniform — he pointed his gun at them and they shot him, according to the police report.

Because the death is suicide-related, the deceased person’s name is being withheld.  We will let you know as soon as we learn more.

Update, 6.4.2012: A family who lives across the street tells us they watched the events unfold from their home.

“We were in the front yard because we saw police cars up the street. Eventually, the police got in through the back door. All lights in the house were off. We could see them turning lights on and checking rooms, using flashlights. The evening culminated in gun shots. Police ran out the door asking for paramedics.  Ambulance, fire truck and police cars were parked up the street. We believe that he called the police threatening suicide which is what prompted the police to come.”
