Lake Highlands and South Garland battled on the Wildcat-Ram turf Friday morning. Lake Highlands, ranked No. 12 in the area, never reached the end zone while South Garland crossed the goal line three times.

The scores are a little misleading. Two of South Garland’s touchdowns were during the second-teamers portion of the scrimmage. One of those two, a 70-yard touchdown run, would have been called back by an illegal formation penalty.

The Wildcats looked better during the “live” portion of the scrimmage played under game-like conditions, although LH could not convert a fourth down inside the South Garland 20. While South Garland took advantage of a base LH defense during the scripted portion of the scrimmage, in the live portion the Cats caused a fumble and recorded a couple of sacks – one by Zach Knickman.

LH head coach Scott Smith said like all scrimmages, things are revealed that are both good and bad, the bad being when tempers flared briefly and some players had to be separated.

“We saw some things that were good and some things we’ve got to work on,” Smith said. “Obviously, the most glaring was our inability to control our temper. There was a bunch of jawing back and forth.”

For those keeping track of the quarterback battle, Michael Ketchmark was 5-of-11 passing for 22 yards and rushed four times for three yards. Trent Jones was 6-of-12 passing for 25 yards, and he carried the ball six times for 32 yards. Smith said to expect a decision soon on a starter.
