Lake Highland’s Nancy Barry will be speaking to Baylor University students Sept. 16 in Waco, giving them all the practical information and life lessons they need as they graduate from college and begin the job-seeking process and enter life in the work world. Nancy will be discussing her book, When Reality Hits: What Employers Want Recent College Grads to Know.

Nancy graduated from LHHS, as did her son Chris, who played football at Yale, and her daughter Lauren, who was president of the Class of 2009 and now a student at Samford University in Birmingham. She says the book is a compilation of her research into what managers say is missing in the “soft skills” of the young people they hire – things like email etiquette, how to shake hands and make eye contact when meeting a new business associate, and how to resolve conflict in the workplace. Nancy reminds students to write handwritten thank you notes after interviews (no, a quickie email won’t do) and show appreciation to co-workers and support staff who help you along the way.
