We got word from a White Rock area neighbor over the weekend regarding another mutilated cat. Geoffrey Ley who lives in Lakewood Heights says he found a small dead cat in his front yard Saturday morning.  “The cat was literally cut in half at its midsection.  There was no blood on our front lawn; so it appears that the mutilation probably occurred elsewhere and the remains were dumped on our lawn by the perpetrator as he or she drove by … It’s very disturbing, and it seems that whoever is perpetrating these crimes is attempting to show-off their deed this time by leaving the remains very near the curb on a street where families like to walk and ride bikes with their children.  Ley called the police, who referred him to animal services, and in the end the sanitation department dealt with the mess.

I spoke this morning with Kent Robertson at Animal Services about this and several similar incidents we’ve heard about. In the case of the skinned cat Edwina from the Casa Linda area — the one reported on television news — Animal Services launched an investigation, but a vet at the VCA animal hospital couldn’t tell for sure whether the cat had been tortured by a human or another animal. “If we determine that an animal has been intentionally mutilated, that a felony has been committed, we would turn it over to the police,” Robertson says.  He didn’t have information on hand about the Ley’s case.

"To coyotes, cats are filet mignon," says Robertson. The coyotes will go right for their insides and often rip them in two. If a human is committing these acts, he says, you should be on the lookout for someone with scratches on their hands and face, because no cat would sit still for this sort of thing.

The Dallas SPCA is offering a $5000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whomever attacked Edwina.
