The fifth annual Run the Highlands 5k and 1-mile Family Walk will be Saturday, April 25, but registration begins mid-March. Funds raised by this Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League event will benefit the east side of the Lake Highlands North Park property. Plans include a family picnic area, a playground shade structure, and a children’s maze with updated landscaping. Registration fees are $15 before April 12; $20 after April 12; $25 the day of race; $10 for children 3-12; and $50 for family packages. For the love of lake highlands north park is a new clean-up event on Saturday, April 4 at 9 a.m., sponsored by the Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League in partnership with the Dallas Park and Recreation Department. The addition of new amenities at the park, made possible by the contributions of the Lake Highlands Exchange Club, the Lake Highlands Women’s League, the Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League, serveral homeowners’ groups and many community members, have made the Lake Highlands North Park a focal point of our neighborhood.Join in by volunteering at this first clean-up day. Texas Center for the Physically Impaired, an organization founded by Lake Highlands resident Robert Langford, seeks donations of used computers and computer parts, which will be refurbished and then shipped free to visually impaired people. According to the organization, 2,800 computers have been donated to the visually impaired during the past five years, including roughly 300 this year. Casa de Vida, a respite care program for caregivers of early onset Alzheimer’s and any other forms of dementia, is offered weekly on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at NorthPark Presbyterian Church, 9555 N. Central Expressway. It’s strictly a social program, with no medications or health care administered. Activities include morning snacks, exercise, bingo, crafts and music.
