The good news: the Lake Highlands area is a great place to cycle your way to fitness. The bad news: you might die trying.

Sarah Scott wrote a piece in this week’s Lake Highlands People ("Cyclists Irk White Rock Residents") about a new petition being circulated by BikeDFW to increase public awareness about bikers on the road after seven recent crashes, two fatal. The reaction from some residents has been swift and strong – clearly some motorists think bikers should get the heck off the road.

I’m no cyclist (though I might become one when the LH Town Center links to the Katy Trail), but my friend Chuck Curtiss tells me that wisdom is somewhere in the middle. "Cyclists have the same right to roadways as motor vehicles except where posted to the contrary," he says, "and cyclists are also fully obligated to abide by all rules of the road." I figure if we all appreciate the value that an active lifestyle brings to our neighborhood (and our property values), we need to find a way to get along.
