A few times a week I walk through White Rock Valley with a friend who has twins; we get extra exercise from pushing the jogging stroller. We usually choose the streets over the sidewalks, and on a recent morning, a woman driving toward us pointed at us, then pointed at a nearby sidewalk — insinuating that we needed to get in our rightful place.

There’s a problem with that, however. It’s not just that the sidewalks are often uneven and full of cracks; it’s also that they stop abruptly and might all of a sudden switch to the other side of the street — or might not continue at all. Not to mention the number of curbs you have to maneuver to make it down just one street. Ramps are almost non-existent on neighborhood sidewalks.
