Janice Hamilton thinks of herself as both teacher and student.

The Lake Highlands resident has painted for 30 years, teaching during that time and studying with other established artists. Today, she frequently teaches workshops and classes for groups and private students. But after years of honing her craft and instructing others, she still sees room for improvement.

"Every time I work on something, I feel like I want to make it a little better," she says. "It’s a constant changing, improving and learning."

Last year, Hamilton presented a one-woman show for the Irving Art Association, and also showed her work in Plano. Galleries with her work include the Salado Gallery in Salado, BartonÕs in Rockwall and the Monticello Gallery in Dallas.

Hamilton uses oils or pastels to create her realistic still lifes, landscapes and portraits. Her choice of subject matter goes in phases. Landscapes are her current favorite, inspired by a recent trip to Santa Fe National Park in New Mexico.

"I paint what excites me," she says. "I stopped doing commissions with portraits, but if I see someone with a wonderful face I ask if I can do a portrait."
