Lauren Maurer at NorthPark
Artwork by White Rock Elementary 5th grader Lauren Maurer is part of a NorthPark Center exhibit featuring local childhood cancer patients. “Healing Works” will be on display in the downstairs space between Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom throughout the month of April.
Diagnosed in 2013 with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Lauren battled the disease for more than two years before beginning kindergarten. Today she’s cancer-free, thanks to her heroes in the oncology department of Children’s Health.
Lauren’s creation is one of 22 paintings in the exhibition designed to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Fund, and each piece was created with the guidance of trained art therapists. Despite their terrifying diagnoses, the children have found a way to express their struggles – and triumphs.
Mom Lisa Maurer says her daughter is thriving these days, playing soccer and volleyball and “doing fantastic.” She’s graduated to the ACE (After Cancer Experience) Program at Children’s, meaning she only needs to check in for yearly visits.

NorthPark Center is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 6 Sunday. The exhibit is free.
