Lake Highlands High School English and ESL teacher Maria Viera-Williams is the World Affairs Council’s International Educator of the Year for 2021.

The World Affairs Council is a regional leader in educating and engaging the public on global affairs. The council’s Global Young Leaders honors an educator who shows exemplary commitment to international awareness for their students.

Viera-Williams will be honored on Tuesday, March 30, and former US secretary of defense James Mattis will be a keynote speaker at the event.

The LHHS teacher is also the founder and senior co-sponsor of the school’s Junior World Affairs Council.

“The Junior World Affairs Council Chapter has played a significant role in global awareness among students, faculty and staff for the past seven years,” said Viera-Williams in a press release. “As the founder and senior co-sponsor, I have been intensely committed to providing students with informative programs that raise awareness on current, past, and future world issues as well as exposure to presenters with international expertise.”

Viera-Williams will receive the 2021 International Educator of the Year Award, which includes a $500 honorarium and participation in the World Affairs Councils of America’s Annual Conference to be held in fall 2021 in Washington, DC.

“Mrs. Viera-Williams is a master of all of the ingredients of successful teaching and leadership,” said LHHS principal Kerri Jones in the release.
