Casting directors at North Texas Performing Arts have long leaned on talented children from Lake Highlands, and this season’s production of “Newsies” brings several returning young Thespians to the stage.

Grayson Brooks, Cliff Wilcox, Frankie Robertson and Saylor Smith (Lake Highlands Elementary), Colt Marr and Ashley Fulmer (White Rock Elementary), Lauren Fulmer (Coram Deo Academy), Meagan Murphy (West Junior High), Maddox Murphy (Merriman Park), Hayes Wilcox (LHJH) and Grace Henington (iUniversityPrep) take the stage this weekend and next. The show is a full-length, Broadway-style production with one difference – every actor is in grades 3 to 12.

Newsies, based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, is set in turn-of-the-century New York City and tells of a charismatic newsboy who leads a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices, the newsies rebel against unfair conditions.

The action this weekend takes place at Willow Bend Center of the Arts, and next week’s show is at Fairview Youth Theatre. You can find showtimes and purchase tickets online here. Break a leg, kids!
