The Exchange Club’s July 4 parade is a time-honored and much-beloved tradition in Lake Highlands, and today’s the day Advocate Magazine would be sharing photos from the event.
The 2020 event was a no-go, but you can see pics here from Church Road parades back to 2010, plus a few vintage photographs from the early days. Danny Meyer says the event began in 1966 or ’67 when his parents, Jeanne and Charlie Meyer, invited neighbors to gather for a patriotic celebration.
“It started in front of our house at 9721 Robin Hill Circle and looped around Estate Lane and back,” Meyer wrote on Facebook. “The Grand Marshall was my grandfather, William Hickey, a WWI veteran in his 70’s who walked the entire route carrying the American flag. It started small and grew until we had the Lake Highlands High School Marching Band, horses and a Vietnam POW as judge just a few months after he had returned.”
We’ve got our fingers crossed for 2021.
