Lake Highlands neighbor Kurt Stadelmann opened Café Max 31 years ago, and his son Kurt Jr. recently joined him after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America. You can view the Richardson store’s menu here and the Plano store’s menu here.

Most of us have a favorite Café Max dish, from the seafood salad to the turkey & broccoli quiche to the chocolate brownie, but mine is secret, so you can’t tell Big Kurt. I mix his chicken salad, with its strips of chicken breast, green apple, red peppers and pecans, in the same big bowl with his pasta salad. I’m not sure if Kurt would appreciate my tinkering with his culinary creation, but when I serve it, people call me Martha Stewart.

Café Max Richardson is open 10-3 at 1600 Alma and the phone is 972-231-5922. Café Max Plano is open 10-5:30 at 6149 Windhaven Parkway #100 and the phone is 972-403-7167.
