The crack of the bat. The smell of the hot dogs. The feel of the red dirt under your feet. Lake Highlands High baseball season kicks off in February, but first they’ll host the team’s newest tradition – their third annual Alumni Baseball Weekend. More than 60 alums have committed to participate.

The fun begins this Friday at 5 p.m. at the LHHS baseball field, known as The Cat. The varsity will play an intersquad scrimmage, then host a Home Run Derby at 7 p.m. for alumni.

On Saturday, the alumni game begins at 1 p.m., with legendary coach Jay Higgins in attendance and players returning from teams between 1969 and 2019.

You can view Chris Dishman’s photos of the first alumni game here.

After the game, players, families and other attendees are invited to the patio at Shady’s for a rehash of the matchup, where the homers get longer and the strikeouts more dramatic in the retelling.

If you’re an alum who’d like to play or a sponsor who’d like to support the effort, email LHHS and UT Baseball alum Taylor Stell at tstell@lee-associates.com. No need to purchase a ticket – all Wildcat baseball games have free admission, and all seats have a perfect view of the mound. Go Cats!
