Construction is underway on a long-awaited sidewalk along Garland Road, which will allow neighbors greater access to the Dallas Arboretum.

The sidewalk will start at the intersection of Lawther Driver and Garland Road. It will extend north along the west side of the road to Timplemore Drive.

Construction on the project is a win for neighbors who have long sought to make the area more pedestrian friendly.

Right now, visitors who don’t want to drive to the garden have to walk or bike over grass along Garland Road. That forces some to travel along the road in search of level ground.

Neighbors have advocated for the projects for years, but the request was complicated by the fact that the state owns the highway.

Although the City of Dallas has limited options to build along Garland Road, the sidewalk in front of the Arboretum is possible because the City owns the land, the Advocate previously reported.

In October 2017, the City Council voted to approve the design contract for the sidewalk. The $400,000 project will be paid for through 2017 bond funds.
