Child Protective Services had given temporary custody of Cedric Jackson to his father’s mother, and she reported him missing from her Lake Highlands condo July 10. Jackson’s boyfriend, Sedrick Johnson, later admitted to police that he tossed the toddler’s lifeless body into a dumpster after the child stopped breathing in the night. Johnson had begun “swaddling” him up tight to control his movements after he made a mess with ketchup. Johnson is being held on $500,000 bond for felony injury to a child.

Officials haven’t specified whether charges against Jackson relate to endangering Cedric or the other six children in the home. CPS says Jackson’s two kids and Johnson’s four have all been removed from their care.

CPS says an internal investigation is underway to determine how Cedric was placed in the home with Johnson, given his extensive criminal background.
