“Juneteenth is something for us to celebrate,” said Congressman Colin Allred before walking in the parade and shaking hands with folks along the route. “It’s the day good news finally came to Texas.”

“This day is about freedom,” agreed State Rep. John Turner, who also walked in the parade distributing candy with his wife and sons. “It’s about community and unity and neighbors and friends.”

At the Willie B. Johnson Recreation Center, live music, kids’ games, free food and helpful services were set up to assist Hamilton Park residents.

“Today was a big success,” reflected organizer La’Gia McCloud after the festival. “We wanted people to enjoy the day and also learn what resources are available to them. Everyone was outside – it turned out great.”
