Daffodils, tulips, hyacinths and most other plants that visitors expect to see at the Arboretum’s spring festival, Dallas Blooms, are safe despite the freezing temperatures early this week, officials said.

But for plants that are sensitive to hard cold spells, Arboretum gardeners are protecting budding spring blooms with a breathable fabric to prevent frost and ice buildup that could cause breaks and damage, said Dave Forehand, vice president of gardens.

Forehand said about 2-3 percent of the 500,000 bulbs will remain covered until Wednesday.

Temperatures, which remained in the 20s Monday, climbed into the mid-40s Tuesday before plummeting below freezing last night, according to the National Weather Service. Warmer weather will return Thursday and Friday, with highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

“I’m hoping this is the last cold spell,” Forehand said. “It’s like spring is right back, and we’ll be ready to roll. Everything’s going to be fine. When it warms up, we want people to come out, have a picnic and enjoy Dallas Blooms.”

Dallas Blooms runs until April 7.
