Richardson ISD is reeling after the loss of 7-year-old Alberto Mejia, who died Monday, Jan. 21, just one week after a car struck him.

The Thurgood Marshall first-grader was walking to the bus stop when he rushed into the roadway near Skillman and Audelia. The driver, who police did not fault, immediately called for help.

“Alberto was a wonderful child who was well-liked by his classmates and teachers, and he will be greatly missed by our Thurgood Marshall family,” Dr. Charmaine Curtis wrote in a letter to parents.

The school is offering crisis counseling to students and teachers throughout the week. Those who need assistance can reach out to Tangela.Spencer@risd.org, Nova.Young@risd.org or call 469-593-6800.

A GoFundMe was established to help his family cover mounting expenses, such as funeral costs, rent and time away from work.

“In life he always gave to others and in death he continues to give,” Karen Nunez wrote on the page. “We’re happy to know he’s going to die a hero, and he’s going to be able to save others lives.”
