When a contractor busted a hole in a wastewater pipe in Plano near White Rock Creek and the George Bush Turnpike, more than a million gallons of sewage leaked into the creek. Though it is 12 miles from White Rock Lake, the sewage is headed for the East Dallas park, so neighbors will need to find a different body of water on which to recreate this weekend.

Though White Rock is not used as a water source (that ended after a big drought in the 1950s), neighbors enjoy the lake via boating, stand-up paddle boards and watching fido launch himself into the water at the dog park.

According to the City of Dallas, the North Texas Municipal Water District will be testing water quality along the creek. Residents should report anything unusual in the stream, such as dead fish, to 3-1-1.

As a precaution, the City of Dallas says that “fish kill and unpleasant odor in and around White Rock Lake is a possibility,” and has directed lake partners and organizations to cancel all water recreation until further notice. Swimming has always been illegal, but fishing is being cautioned against as well.
