COPE (Cost of Poverty Experience) shares the real-life trials and tribulations of needy families in our neighborhood

If you are a volunteer or your job brings you into contact with the needy among us, organizers at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church invite you not just to hear about poverty, but to experience it first-hand.

The Cost of Poverty Experience (COPE) offers participants a glimpse into the lives of low-income families and individuals living in our community, including the obstacles they hurdle, the decisions they make and the consequences they face every day. The workshop will be held at the church from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5th.

“The best way I would explain living in poverty, after going through the COPE experience,” said one participant, “would be living in a house of cards. You have to put things a certain way to be able to build up even just a little bit, and you think you’re getting ahead, and then one tiny little wind comes and it’s all flat again.”

COPE is sponsored by Feed Lake Highlands, an outreach of LHUMC, and all LH residents interested in learning how to wrestle with issues of poverty are invited. Organizers say it’s especially helpful for pastors and congregation members leading mission trips abroad, nonprofits looking to inform their volunteers and donors, and workers in education, healthcare and other sectors who engage with needy clients.
