Oktoberfest 2016

Oktoberfest, a day of good music, good brews and good neighbors, is the Lake Highlands’ Exchange Club’s (more about them in this month’s cover story) biggest annual event, attracting thousands and raising money for neighborhood projects and nonprofits. Support Lake Highlands Elementary by taking part in Spirit Night from 4:30-6:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, at the newly opened Chick-fil-A, 9111 Garland Road. There will be games and prizes along with money raised for the school. Bring a flyer to ensure your order helps the local elementary school (it’s attached at the bottom and digital versions are accepted, so you can pull up this story in line on your phone).

A Tasteful Place, the Arboretum’s new edible display garden, opens on Oct. 3. The new space overlooks the lake and downtown and includes several gardens that will be used in the cooking classes and demonstrations that will take place in the new pavilion, which can be used for private events as well. The space is designed to highlight the view, and includes new trails, orchards and a lagoon.

A Tasteful Place is the new food-production garden at the Dallas Arboretum.

Internationally renowned hula hoop group Chula Hoop USA will be performing at the Dallas Arboretum this Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m.,1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Terrace at the Camp House. This Oktoberfest-themed performance will be followed by a hand’s on hula hoop class. The activity is free with the price of admission.

The Glen Oaks Homeowners Association will host its inaugural National Night Out starting at 6 p.m. on Oct. 3. City Councilman Adam McGough, Cathy Stewart from the public improvement district, Northeast Division police and
a parade of pets are on the schedule. Music, food, T-shirts and local vendors will all be on site. The location is the Glen Oaks Townhomes, 9910 Royal Lane. There is no cost to attend.

When the field at St. James Episcopal turns orange, you know the season is upon us. Peruse the field at the corner of Audelia and McCree to pick your family’s perfect pumpkin. It’s open every day in October, beginning this Sunday. All month long, hours are Sunday through Thursday from 1-7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Look for special events every Saturday like a pumpkin carving competition or trunk-or-treat (see a schedule at stjamesdallas.org/pumpkin-patch). Proceeds from these sales benefit the St. James Episcopal youth ministry.

Half-Price Books will be hosting retired detective and star of the documentary series “Homicide Hunter,” Detective Lt. Joe Kenda on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. Kenda will discuss and sign copies of his true crime book “I Will Find You: Solving Killer Cases from My Life Fighting Crime,” which will be available for purchase.

Play with some adoptable cats and possibly find a new furry friend this Sunday from 1-3p.m. at Unleashed, 8180 Park Lane. Dallas Pets Alive, a nonprofit rescue, will have cats ready to adopt on site.

Singer-songwriter Mike Donahue performs at White Rock Coffee on Friday from 8-10 p.m. He’ll bring along a few guest performers.
