Likely at the top would be the Exchange Club’s Fourth of July Parade and Carnival, and this year will be special. Lake Highlands High 1999 grad Wade Smith, who played 12 seasons in the NFL and now leads The Wade Smith Foundation for children’s literacy, will serve as Grand Marshal. Smith established Smitty’s Scholars, a college scholarship program, and Reading with the Pros for celebrity book readings and classroom visits. His own two books, Smitty Tackles Bullying and Smitty Hits the (Play) Books, keep children riveted at library readings and have great messages.

And Wildcats love it when he shows up to LHHS for pep rallies.

The patriotic parade will also include firefighters, our high school band and drill team, the Wildcat Wranglers country-and-western dance group, civic groups and businesses on decorated floats and children riding decorated bikes and trikes.

And Uncle Sam on stilts, of course. What’s July 4th without Uncle Sam on stilts?

Afterward, participants, spectators and volunteers are invited to enjoy food and carnival activities at the Lake Highlands North Community Park and Recreation Center.

The parade begins promptly at 9 a.m. at the corner of Church Road and Green Oaks and moves westward down Church. Judging of the children’s vehicles begins at 8:30 in the North Highlands Bible Church parking lot.

See you there!
