Neighborhood author Monica Shaw will be hosting a book signing for her book “The Rainwater Secret” at Lucky Dog Books at its new Casa Linda location this Thursday, June 22, at 7 p.m. Shaw tells the story of Anna, who leaves her life in England to go on a mission in Nigeria with the Missionaries of Mary to teach leper children. Follow Anna through her adventures and hardships as she creates a home for outcast children of Africa. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Missionaries of Mary.

This Friday night, head to Uncle Calvin’s for an acoustic performance from Jeff Black. This roots performer is producing some of the most resonant and rich music of his career, capturing the wisdom needed for today’s world. The show is at 8 p.m. and tickets are from $15-$18.

Get your health fix this weekend at the White Rock Market, Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market is at Lake Pointe Church and will have local produce, artisan eats and crafts.

The University at C. C. Young is hosting a discussion over the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, as well as the orbits of the earth and moon. John Bill McMillan, who will be leading the discussion, has a degree in aeronautical engineering and is retired after 40 years in the space industry. Head to the Dallas Children’s Theater this weekend for the opening of “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale.” This Zimbabwe-based Cinderella story has traditional dancing, drumming, and unique African singing. The play runs through July 9 and tickets are from $23 to $30.
