Dallas City Council member Adam McGough announced his intention to run for a second term via social media yesterday, saying he is “prepared to continue service to #D10 and the City of Dallas. This has already been an amazing journey serving alongside so many inspiring people, and we are #JustGettingStarted.”
District 10 encompasses Lake Highlands.
McGough won in 2015 by a narrow margin – just 36 out of 5,968 votes – but has surged in public approval since, glad-handing at town halls, charity fundraisers, school events and other community gatherings. He has fired the starting pistol at races, cut the ribbon for new businesses, turned the shovel for groundbreakings – and even served as “celebrity” waiter at the Lake Highlands Women’s League home tour luncheon.
In addition to cultivating support within Lake Highlands, McGough touts the relationships he’s built in other sectors of the city. At a recent District 10 Town Hall, attending council members were effusive in their praise for McGough.
The council will have their work cut out for them.
As the May election approaches, the Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating whether criminal behavior in prior years may have contributed to the multi-billion-dollar shortfall facing Dallas’ police and fire pension funds. Money woes have forced a postponement of Dallas’ bond election, and citizens are reminded of the delay each time they drive over a pothole. With police morale at a new low, the department has a large number of slots to fill.
On the other hand, McGough’s picture of Lake Highlands is rosy.
“[In past years] There has been a lack of development in Lake Highlands,” McGough said in June, describing the multi-pronged work of his development team, “but we are on the rise.” Work on the Lake Highlands Town Center continues in earnest, construction on the Alamo Drafthouse complex is set to begin soon and new families are moving in faster than Richardson ISD schools can keep up, among other happenings frequently cited.
It’s not clear yet if McGough will face a challenger in the May 6th election.
