The Store in Lake Highlands will celebrate 14 years at Northlake Center

In 2002, Michael Jackson dangled Baby Prince from a balcony, Robert Blake (TV’s Baretta) was acquitted of murdering his wife and Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open. A little closer to home that year, Cheryl Calvin opened The Store in Lake Highlands at Northlake Shopping Center.

Calvin will mark the 14th anniversary with a big party Thursday-Saturday, March 3-5.There will be door prizes, food and reminiscences of those early days.

“We always think back to opening The Store in Lake Highlands when the anniversary comes around,” says Calvin. “[Lake Highlands High School 2010 graduate] Allison was in fourth grade, now married and living in Austin, and [LHHS 2013 grad] Gregg was in first grade, now a junior at Abilene Christian University. It was the March after 9/11, and we opened because the community wanted small businesses to open. I had experience in my mom’s store in Salado and had friends that encouraged me to open a store. Even after 14 years, we have people that come in every day that have never been in The Store and have ‘lived in Lake Highlands forever.’”

Casa Linda Bakery cake will be served and One90 Smoked Meats will be on site Thursday from 4-7 p.m. with a smoker selling turkey legs and sausage. The Carter Bloodcare bus will receive blood donations Thursday from 1-4, and the Reverse Food Truck will be collecting food and/or monetary donations Friday and Saturday from 10-4. If you’d like to give blood, you can make arrangements here.
