Newly installed school zone on Church Road

Sixth-grader Will Mina is too young to remember that, years ago, there was a school zone and a crossing guard on Church Road at Tory Sound. In those days, Will’s dad, John, and John’s friend, Bill Harbaugh, used to cross back-and-forth on their bikes as they went to Merriman Park Elementary.

This morning, as Richardson ISD classes begin, the school zone is back – and Crossing Guard Clyde is in his post – thanks to Will’s tenacity and influence. After Will spoke to the Dallas City Council August 5th, city crews installed the blinking lights on Friday.

“Each day we ride with our friends,” Will explained to rapt councilmembers, “and our mom or dad has to help us get across the street on Church Road because cars are flying past us. After school it is even worse, because teenagers from Lake Highlands High School get out of school and speed on Church Road. My brother was almost hit a few times even with an adult trying to help us.”

Recently-sworn-in councilman Adam McGough, who represents Lake Highlands’ District 10, says the decision was an easy one.

“This is a prime example of what can happen when the community comes together and works with elected officials to make change in their neighborhoods,” McGough said in a statement. “I am thankful for each and every parent, teacher, advocate and child who stepped up to make this school zone a reality and make our neighborhood safe. It truly takes a village.

“Dallas County Schools was integral in helping make this a reality through the work of board president Larry Duncan and board member and Lake Highlands resident Omar Narvaez. Jill Jordan and Dennis Ware really worked hard on behalf of the city to expedite the signage and get things in place as school starts. Merry Vickers and Cristal Retana also spent time working on strategies to make this a reality.”

Drivers are cautioned to watch for students and advised to remember speed limits and cell phone rules. Phone use is prohibited behind the wheel in active school zones and on all school property unless using a hands-free device.

Happy first day of school!
