It is a viral stunt aimed at raising awareness and funds for the ALS Association, which supports amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, research and treatment. Participants dump ice water over their heads and challenge others to do the same within 24 hours or donate $100. According to a Sunday New York Times article, the stunt has garnered millions of dollars for the foundation.

The Lake Highlands High School Wildcats football team received and accepted the challenge from Richardson High School. Here’s a video of them performing the ice-water dump.
