Deep South burger and fries
Deep South Burger Bar has been open two weeks now, and already they’re developing a following for their tasty burgers and sweet potato waffle fries. Their space at 9090 Skillman has been home to Burger Spot, an Italian joint and several other endeavors over the years, but owner Bob Keith, Jr., proprietor at four White Rock-area Subway shops, says he’s here to stay and hopes to open more Deep Souths when this one take off.
The menu at Deep South is pretty basic. The classic quarter pound burger, made from fresh, never frozen American beef, is $3.99 with additions like bacon, avocado or chili optional and extra. Grilled chicken and white meat turkey burgers are available, as are 100% beef hot dogs and kids’ grilled cheese. Fresh cut fries or sweet potato waffles are the sides, and you can opt for sodas or vanilla, chocolate or strawberry shakes.
Debbie, the manager, tells me the blank walls and dark TVs are temporary – southern-themed art and sports on the cable are coming. Black floors and red chairs pick up the Lake Highlands theme.
So far the crowd is eclectic – last week’s patrons included a ladies’ bible study, contractors in work trucks, businessmen on their lunch break, students out of school for the summer and the general LH neighborhood crowd.
