Architect Lorena Toffer, who resides in Lake Highlands, received the national young architects award at last night’s AIA Celebrate Architecture Award ceremony. Toffer tells CultureMap, “One of the [architecture] projects I am most proud of was created a reading room so they could bring some of their collections up from the basemen at the Sixth Floor Museum. It’s been booked every day since it opened, and people are coming from all over the world.” Read more about Toffer’s challenges and experiences as a female architect here.

According to Dallas Observer a number of preservationists worry about the city’s planned Trinity Spine Trail — a 12-foot-wide ribbon of concrete, when complete, will stretch from White Rock to Interstate 20 — including detriment to natural habitats, cost of maintenance, and crime patrol.

Monday’s icy weather closed schools as well as delayed court dates — including that of Cesar Benitez, who recently pled guilty to a series of rapes in Lake Highlands. Benitez was scheduled to be sentenced by state District Judge Ernie White, but because of the weather closures, Dallas News reports that sentencing has been delayed. At this time, the new sentencing date has not been announced. Benitez faces up to life in prison.
