Lora Welty’s band, Carpet Burn, will perform at the LHWL kick off Sept. 5

The Lake Highlands Women’s League is hosting a kick-off party to celebrate the approaching home tour and to announce (surprise!) the four Lake Highlands homeowners who’ve agreed to open their lovely houses for charity. In a new twist, the League is inviting the community to join the fun, and they’ve booked League member Lora Welty and her band, Carpet Burn, as entertainment for the event.

The party, a celebration of the League’s 35th annual tour, will be held at Lake House Bar & Grill on Thursday, September 5th from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $20 each and include hors d’oeuvre buffet and cash bar. Proceeds from the party, just as proceeds from the home tour, will go to LH community projects and college scholarships.

Since the League was founded in 1969, they’ve distributed more than $1.6 million to Lake Highlands students, schools and projects. LHWL has 100 active members and nearly 200 sustainers (including this proud blogger), and monthly meetings are punctuated by teary readings of grateful letters from college students who received scholarships. More than 800 service hours are returned to LH each year.

If you’d like more info about the kick-off, you can email LHWL President Susan Solomon at sweybridge@gmail.com, chat with tour chairmen Mary Barnes or Chris Moomaw, or purchase tickets online here.
